This great circular walk around Saxton, starting at the Crooked Billet is a little short of 6km, with an easy, well sign-posted route and fab views of the local countryside.

Distance: 3.5 miles

Parking: There are a few spaces at the start of the walk (opposite the gate to the Lead Church). Alternatively, there is lay-by a little up the road towards Saxton/

Accessibility: This route has a couple of hills and paths are uneven (and can be pretty muddy) which would make it unsuitable for buggies.

Facilities: Enjoy the facilities at the Crooked Billet pub, or in Saxton at the Greyhound Inn (currently closed)

Start at the bridleway that heads uphill to the right of the Crooked Billet, opposite the Lead Church. Continue straight on this path, and eventually you’ll reach a small country road.

Turn left and walk towards Saxton- don’t worry the traffic is minimal, and there are no hedgerows so it’s easy to walk on the grass verges. In fact the last time I walked it not a single car passed me!

As you approach the village look out for a footpath to your left- next to a little white fence. Continue on the track until it bends to the right- at which point you need to go through the path to pick up another footpath across fields. Head straight until you get to the road (Dam Lane).

At Dam Lane, turn right towards Saxton. When you reach Milner Lane turn left and follow the road all the way to the next juntion.

Cross the road and head straight- this turns to a farm track and you continue past the farm buildings until you see a left hand turn signposted to the Lead Church and Crooked Billet. This path takes you all the way past the Lead Church and to your starting point.
