The Harland Way: Wetherby to Spofforth

This three mile route along the Harland Way is perfect for little bikers; it’s flat and easy riding (as long as it’s not too muddy!). There are no roads and there’s a playarea right at the end of the track at the Spofforth end. Ideal!

The Start of the Harland Way in Wetherby

Distance: 3 miles in each direction

Parking: Park at the free Wetherby Car Park: Old Station Car Park. It’s right at the start of the Harland Way so the perfect locations!

Facilities: None, although there are plenty of bars and cafes in Wetherby, and one of my favourite EVER pubs, The Castle, is located in Spofforth (albeit a short walk along a busy road from the end of the trail).

Accessibility: This route is buggy friendly and great for bikes. Its a good family bike ride, although if you did want to venture to Spofforth Castle be aware there is a road section.

The Route Along The Harland Way

Starting at the carpark, head to the clearly marked start of the trail and take the left fork towards Spofforth (also clearly signposted). This path is well surfaced, with a pretty embankment on either side.

When the path opens out, continue ahead, the track is on a slighty raised area that passes above a residential area of Wetherby. Until the path leaves the town there is a good surface, but be aware that it can then get pretty muddy in wetter months!

You’ll get some lovely views over the fields between Wetherby and Spofforth, and will pass the point that you pop out to Stockeld Park.

At the end of the trail in Spofforth, you’ll see a play area with benches directly opposite you. Perfect for a little play before you return. Alternatively, head up to the main road and head right towards the Castle pub (we love it here) and a little further you’ll reach Spofforth Castle.

This was our choice, and as our daughter (4) is a relatively new rider, we pushed the bikes along the busy main road. We opted to eat our packed lunch on the picnic benches at Spofforth Castle, where we had a little wander before returning to Wetherby.

It’s a great little walk or ride!
